Sept 19, 2024 – Unwinding a Business is Hard

Today we will talk about a little bit of a tangent but I’m realizing how hard it is to unwind a business. We are closing our Amazon business so we can fully concentrate on Fix it Today. Our Amazon business was good, we made some mistakes along the way and ultimately today I feel like the best thing to do is shut it down. It seems like some daunting days ahead as we try and get rid of everything, pay back what we owe and move on. We have a lot of crap! 😢

So back to the normal subject at hand. Fix it Today. Another day of grinding away with the hopes of a brighter future. I’m thankful to have our new team members as they are accomplishing more than I could have ever imagined. I love seeing the messages of new providers that are interested in signing up, but what I love more is the new provider registration emails. Neil is following up with companies and finding people are interested but just forgot about the platform. We will keep reminding them…like everyday….forever.

So today I spent my day trying to tie up loose ends and then a “big” project was in front of me. Matt from yesterday or the day before mentioned that it took him a few look overs on our site to really understand the difference in our platform vs the competitive lead generation platforms. That’s a problem that needed to be solved. While it seems so simple, I had to really look over the provider benefits page and ask myself how I can make it more clear and what the correct words were. Everything I came up with felt like could be better. ChatGPT to the rescue.

AI is a novel little thing and for stuff like this, its a game changer. I simply told it about our business and how we are different and needed to note that difference. We needed to convey that we don’t get leads, we get appointments. I’m sure many people out there will say its simple but it took me over an hour of thinking then giving up to use chatGPT. What did it come up with? “No leads, just booked appointments: only pay when your calendar fills up”. Damn its good. Its simple to say we don’t generate leads and get you actual appointments. Then it goes on to tell them you only pay when we have something on your calendar.

Since it did such a good job, I decided to see what it came up with for the actual home page. Before it said something like “Find service professionals in real time”. Again, explained the platform from the homeowners side and it came up with “Find available service experts to Fix it Today”. Uses our name as a schtick. Love it. We (chatGPT and I) changed the little oval thing above the title from “get started” to “free to use”. This gives the user the signal that our service is free for them. I think that is an important aspect. Next I need to feed chatgpt our hero section and look for feedback. My software developers uploaded our wireframe for the home maintenance reminders and the dang thing analyzed it and gave a great critique!
