shiny object syndrome

Nov 28, 2024 – Happy Thanksgiving

Well, not a lot to talk about since it was Thanksgiving. I had a lazy day with the family but did put in some thought about an idea my project manager floated. He said we should add salon type services. So hair cutting, nails, waxing, etc. There is a company in India that did this and they got a ton of use from it. I checked out the website Urban Company and heck, they had almost 300k reviews on just “salon” services. I expressed I really wanted to stick to services that come to you at your house, not scheduling for a salon. He said “right”. What I didn’t realize is Urban Company did was change the game. They started the in home services for all of the basic salon services.

So this idea make sense. The lady that cuts my hair would be willing to come to my house if needed to cut my hair. Heck she did go to my in-laws to cut my son’s hair. She has gone to other people’s houses we know of. This is something that could really change the game if people are willing to go to someone’s house. Massage services are often mobile. So why would a stylist or masseuse want to do this? In my mind, they can charge more money. Imagine a $30 hair cut can now be $50. Or if a person gets a hair cut, wash and a color, it can now be $250 instead of $200. The person can also possibly reduce their costs of chair rental at a salon where they rent space. I’m sure people would love the convenience of it…I know I would. I’d save an extra 1/2 hour just on my drive to the salon and back.

Why this is a great idea for Fix it Today… There is a lot of use. Men often get their hair cut every month. Women get their hair done more often then they get their a/c fixed. These are ongoing services that will be used multiple times per year. We would need to decrease our fees though as a $30 haircut cannot absorb our standard fee. The customer lifetime value would go up though. The more we offer on Fix it Today, the more use, the faster word of mouth can travel. We will see. Something to figure out and a new group of people to start to talk to.
