shiny object syndrome

Dec 12, 2024 – A Slow Day

Didn’t have a lot of motivation today and didn’t get a great amount of work done but I did a lot of thinking. Its funny to hear how lots of startups pivot and this is why angels and seed investors are big on the team. I’m wondering if we should have a small pivot. Its a thought but I’m not sure how big it could be or if its just the gateway to what we have already built.

So I wrote about the salon type services but the more I think about it, the more I feel like we need to implement this. I got my hair cut today and the amazing lady who has cut my hair for 20 years was able to answer some questions for me. She used to go to people’s houses to cut their hair when she first started. She didn’t have a salon an didn’t rent a chair so word of mouth and going to people’s houses is where she started. I have long known about wealthy people getting people to come to their house for a haircut but I always assumed it would be very expensive. Ending up, it doesn’t really have to be.

So I feel like I have been around for a bit and seen a lot of things in my 40 years, but somehow neither my wife or I really knew there are mobile stylists. So mobile stylists are definitely a thing and they can be found on Google. I have talked to some people over the last week or two and they didn’t really know this was a thing either. I feel like this is something that needs recognition and is available to anyone. I feel like mobile stylists don’t have a great advertising platform or a way to put themselves out there. They are probably not Google ad people nor are they technology people. I found businesses with a Google Business Profile but no website. Maybe a Facebook page.

I just have this feeling there is a much larger market of people out there that would want these services but they just don’t know about it. With the way our society has changed to the craving of ease and convenience generation. Uber, Walmart Plus, DoorDash… haircuts? I think there is a large underserved population of elderly that would LOVE to have someone come out and cut their hair, style their hair, make them feel like a million bucks. I usually go get my hair cut on Fridays, not sure why but I have run into the same older lady many times. She goes every single week to get her hair done. What about all of the people that can’t drive? The assisted living places that only take the troop out to Walmart one day a week on the van. A whole generation of people who are likely underserved. Also, what about the mom with 3 kids who can never go out and get her hair done or nails done because she cannot let her kids go wild at a salon. There is something here, we just have to understand how to connect the two through Fix it Today.

The connection part is easy. We can lower our fees as a $30 or $40 haircut can’t absorb the same fees $150 HVAC call can. We need to find a way to connect not only to the current mobile hair stylists but the ones who are not. I’m assuming the vast majority of these folks are not mobile. The good news is, once a few find out, they would likely tell their coworkers there is a way to make extra money and it would pay them more. The people that work at Supercuts or something vs renting a chair may really benefit from the increased revenues. Hair, nails…this is sounding more like mobile dog grooming
